At Bowes Primary School we aim to provide a PE curriculum that not only engages our pupils, but excites them too. Pupils will experience a broad range of activities that help them to develop their health, fitness and wellbeing.
Our high-quality physical education curriculum aims to inspire all pupils to develop, succeed and excel in sport and other physically-demanding activities. It provides opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities also support team work and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.
Our PE programme incorporates a variety of sports and competitions/events to ensure that all pupils engage in physical activity. All pupils receive two PE lessons a week (one indoor and one outdoor) taught by their class teacher. Detailed lesson plans ensure that all teachers are equipped with the secure subject knowledge required to deliver modern, high-quality teaching and learning opportunities for all areas of PE.
Our curriculum ensures that, through carefully planned and sequenced lessons, pupils apply and develop a broad range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways. Prior learning is always considered and opportunities for revision and practise are incorporated.
The curriculum is further enhanced by participation in numerous sporting tournaments with other schools in our Trust, the surrounding area and after school clubs. In addition, all pupils in Year 3 are taught to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres.
Play leaders and PE apprentices lead a range of sports activities at lunchtimes and within our after-school club, including: football, basketball and tennis. There are also a number of sport-based extra-curricular clubs available after school, such as, multi-sports, football, basketball, rounders, dance and athletics.
As an Active School, we aim to ensure that pupils participate in active lessons outside their regular PE lessons, for example, incorporating moments within other curriculum areas whereby pupils can be active.
Reception/Key Stage 1 Physical Education
Pupils develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They are able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
Key Stage 2 Physical Education
Pupils continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
The curriculum is the progression model. If pupils are able to demonstrate they are able to know and remember more against our curriculum expectations they are making good progress and attaining expected standards.
During and/after lessons, pupils are assessed through informal assessment techniques: questioning, conferencing, reviewing work against learning objective/success criteria, short retrieval activities.
At the end of units, we use summative assessment to determine children’s understanding and inform teachers' planning.
