Eco Park Visit

Article written by our Sustainability Ambassadors.

This week, the Sustainability Ambassadors visited the huge ECO Park in Edmonton for a workshop on caring for our planet. We found out about food waste and what happens to our rubbish. When we put rubbish in our bins, it is driven to a massive warehouse to be converted into energy by being heated to 1,000 degrees. The smoke is then filtered to make it clean before it goes up the chimney. We had a tour of the warehouse, even visiting the crow’s nest, where workers use cameras to watch the entire site. We found out that there are workers there 24/7 because the amount of waste from seven local authorities per day is so much that, if they closed for two days the warehouse would flood with rubbish.

As a school, we must help reduce, recycle, reuse, and repair. We learnt that if clothes have a small hole, you don’t need to get rid of them, you can just fix them yourself. If you still don’t want them, give them to a friend or a local charity. We also learnt that copper, a natural resource, is used in mobile phone wires. If we throw phones away, we lose copper, but recycling saves it. With only 200 years of copper left, we must recycle it.

Let’s all make sure we REDUCE, RECYCLE, RE-USE, AND REPAIR.
